About BlackGurl Inc.

BlackGurl Inc. was founded in 2001 by Lisa Butler. As the Site Coordinator with the Harris YWCA’s Young Parents Program in 1999, Lisa became very aware of the inadequate services available to African American young women. The service gap included pregnancy prevention programming, HIV/AIDS prevention, self-esteem building and much more.

Additionally there was no safe environment for young women to question and explore their own beliefs, feelings, familial traditions and cultural biases once they had received the information. Lisa also observed a lack in positive peer support and mentors, thus leaving young women to their own minimal knowledge and reasoning skills. Lisa therefore felt a need to fill this gap with what is now BlackGurl Inc.
